Eastern Cape principal accused of blowing R1 million in school funds on alcahol and fine dining
An Eastern Cape school principal is under investigation for allegedly squandering more than R1 million meant for school meals, learning materials, and maintenance on personal luxuries, including alcohol, fine dining, and fuel.
According to a Sunday Times report, Ulwazi High School principal Mihlali Makhalima in Mdantsane allegedly used the school’s account for lavish spending at high-end restaurants, bars, and fast-food outlets. Bank records show that between January 2023 and April 2024, about R250 000 was spent on restaurants, R450 000 withdrawn in cash, and over R200 000 used for till cash-backs.
The money was allocated through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) to provide two meals a day to about 1 200 learners. However, pupils say they often receive only one meal and seldom get fruit.
Education authorities have since suspended the principal pending the outcome of an investigation. The Eastern Cape Department of Education confirmed that the transactions violated financial policies, including the unlawful use of a school bank card.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about accountability in the province’s no-fee schools, where mismanagement directly deprives impoverished learners of food and basic learning support.
